Urban Sketching & Watercolor with Ink Demos:

Activate your senses in Cuba's many-layered environment, and let your sketchbook be your guide.  Daily urban sketching and watercolor with ink demonstrations are accompanied by accessible prompts and ongoing support to get your creativity flowing and make the most of your time in Cuba.  We will work on street-scenes, portraiture, interiors, landscape, and emotion balanced with detail.  You might choose to do many quick sketches, or a few long pieces, or just take in your environment and snap lots of photos from which to paint later -- there are many ways to have an aesthetically rich experience in Cuba.  Individual support from Laura, an experienced and positive teacher, and group sharing are key elements of every day's painting adventure.

As your mentor in your Cuban art journey, I'm excited to share what I've learned about painting on the road and cultivating cultural perception as part of an aesthetic travel experience.  My work teaching in inner city schools, traveling and farming in remote areas, and living an artistic life near and far are seeds for these Cuban Art Adventures that I'm excited to share with you.

Local Guides & Cuban Friends:

One thing that distinguishes these trips is our excellent local guides and group of friends working to give you a warm and fascinating introduction to Cuba.  Our guides for excursions are knowledgeable and give personal as well as historical experience.  Our hosts are elegant and welcoming casa owners.  Our salsa teachers will make it easy to relax and have fun in Cuba.  The Cuban friends who join us for meals will share their life experience and views, and be eager to hear your impressions of the country they love.  Most travelers to Cuba say that, in a country of beautiful and compelling sights and experiences, it's the people who leave the strongest positive impression.  Here, it will be easy to make Cuban friends and begin to see the country through their eyes.

Casa Accommodation:

Accommodation is in Cuba's classic "casa particulares", which are basically bed & breakfasts: private homes run by local families with 4-8 rooms to rent and lovely breakfast in the morning.  These are widespread in Cuba and a great way to get to know the country.  Rooms are clean and comfortable, air conditioning is in every room, bathrooms have showers and hot/cold running water, and there is access to a kitchen and refrigerator if needed.  These are private homes - not 5-star hotel accommodations - but they have more character and are often far more relaxing.  Casa breakfasts are typically tropical fruit, eggs with or without ham, rolls, coffee/tea, and fresh fruit juice.

Cost of Package:

For all outlined above:

Other Information:

Flights are not part of the package - you are responsible for booking your own transport to and from Havana.  American Airlines, JetBlue and many other carriers now fly daily from Boston, New York, and other major cities.

Visas/Cuban Travel Cards are not included in this package - you are responsible for securing your own Travel Card and completing your Travel Affidavit.  Fortunately, this is very easy to do.  Most commercial airlines to Cuba now include the forms to obtain the Visa/Travel Card and complete the Travel Affadavit as part of the online booking process.  This is a prompt similar to choosing your seats on the flight, and it takes about the same amount of time to complete -- just a few clicks.  There are 12 legitimate reasons for which Cuban Visas are granted, and this trip falls well within the Educational provision.  At your airline gate in the airport, you will be asked to pay for the Visa by credit card and will be given the physical Visa document - this process usually takes 5 minutes.  You can see more about this process here:
